About St Botolph's Church, Ruxley

St Botolph’s Church, Ruxley lies in Sidcup, Greater London, on land belonging to Ruxley Manor Garden Centre. It is no longer a place of worship and survives in a poor state, although much of the roof and historic structure remains. The church is protected as both a scheduled monument and a Grade II-listed building.

Dating from the 13th century, the church was named for Botwulf of Thorney and remained in religious use for about 300 years. It was formally closed for worship in 1557, when Ruxley parish became part of neighbouring North Cray. The building subsequently served agricultural purposes for more than four centuries, including the storage of farm equipment. Remnants of an oast house can be seen beside it. Archaeological investigation in the 1960s uncovered traces of an earlier timber building, raising the possibility that a Saxon church once occupied the site.
