About Saint Mary

Saint Mary is an Anglican parish church on The Fairway in South Ruislip, Greater London. It serves a parish established during the area’s twentieth-century suburban growth. Designated Grade II in 2022 for architectural and historical interest, the church returned to use in June 2024 after a closure for asbestos removal and refurbishment.

The parish was formed in the early 1950s from part of St Paul’s, Ruislip Manor. Laurence King designed the building, which was under construction from 1957 until its consecration in May 1959; Ove Arup and Partners handled the structural engineering. Its modern design reflects the influence of the 1951 Festival and uses pale yellow brickwork, visible concrete framing and a folded copper roof. Distinctive elements include the curved apse, bands of unusually shaped clerestory glazing, narrow vertical windows and a pyramid-shaped bell housing. At the western end, broad glazing forms a backdrop to Brian Asquith’s seven-metre sculpture of the crucifixion, carved from Portland stone.
