About Church of St Helen and St Giles
The Church of St Helen and St Giles is a Church of England place of worship in Rainham, Greater London. A prominent local landmark, it is protected as a Grade I listed building and is regarded as the earliest surviving structure in the London Borough of Havering.
Built between about 1160 and 1170, the church is Norman in origin and was founded by Richard de Lucy, a son-in-law of King Henry II. De Lucy was also among those who helped instigate the killing of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. Much of the medieval character survives, including distinctive arches with rounded heads and several other early elements. Restoration was undertaken from 1893 to 1906, supported by donations from Freemasons. Despite this work, the building is believed to remain close in appearance to its original form.
