About St. Mary the Virgin

St. Mary the Virgin is an active Anglican parish church serving Downe, near Orpington in Greater London. The present structure has its origins in the 1200s and is designated Grade II*. Its worship reflects the Church of England’s conservative evangelical tradition. A yew in the burial ground has been included among the capital’s recognised Great Trees.

The oldest coloured glass in the building occupies the western window and shows Jesus as the Good Shepherd. It was designed by Daniel Bell, whose life spanned 1840 to 1915. The church and its grounds also have strong connections with naturalist Charles Darwin, a resident of nearby Down House from 1842 until 1882 who contributed substantially to parish activities. He was interred at Westminster Abbey, but Emma Darwin, some of their children and several relatives from the Darwin and Wedgwood families rest in the churchyard.
