About The Parish Church of St Peter, Firle
The Parish Church of St Peter, Firle serves the local Anglican parish in this East Sussex village. Consecrated in honour of the apostle Peter, it continues as a place of worship within the united benefice covering Firle, Glynde and Beddingham. The building has Grade I protection and lies near Firle Place, whose Gage family owners have supported it over many centuries.
Firle had a Saxon place of worship before 1066, but much of the current structure dates from about 1250. Its thirteenth-century work includes the long nave, chancel and tower at the western end. Two side aisles, supported by eight-sided columns, followed during the next century. A sixteenth-century porch uses alternating flint and stone, while the Gage Chapel was completed around 1595. Surviving furnishings include medieval piscinae and elaborate Gage memorials, notably Sir John Gage and Philippa portrayed in alabaster. Glass installed between 1885 and 1985 includes designs by Henry Holiday and John Piper.
