About St Saviour, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist Catholic Church

St Saviour, St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist Catholic Church is an active Roman Catholic parish church at 175 Lewisham High Street, in central Lewisham, London. It serves the local Catholic community and is protected as a Grade II listed building. St Saviour’s Catholic Primary School stands beside it.

Regular Catholic worship in Lewisham was organised from 1893, initially taking place in a private home before moving to temporary premises and then a converted chapel. A school and chapel were erected on the High Street in 1898. Claude Kelly designed the present Italianate church, which opened in 1909 after Patrick James Foley financed its construction. It was enlarged in 1914 with additions including the principal altar, pulpit, aisles, confessionals and St Patrick’s chapel, and was consecrated in 1917. Further chapels followed between 1918 and 1924, while the presbytery and bell tower were added in 1928–29. The interior, distinguished by coloured marble, underwent repairs in 1978–79.
