About St Olave's Church
St Olave’s Church stood on Tooley Street in Southwark, London. The street’s name developed from a shortened form of the dedication. The church ceased to be used in 1926 and was subsequently demolished. St Olaf House now occupies the site and accommodates part of London Bridge Hospital.
Probably established as Earl Godwin’s private chapel in the early 11th century, the church honoured Olav Haraldsson, the Norwegian king killed in 1030. It may be the Southwark church recorded in the Domesday survey and was identified by name by 1096. A Norman stone structure replaced an earlier Saxon building, possibly made from wood. Its riverside position left it vulnerable, and flooding in 1327 damaged the walls. After part of the ageing building fell in 1736, Henry Flitcroft designed its replacement, completed the following year by mason John Deval. This later church suffered severe damage during the Tooley Street fire of 1843.
