About St Matthew's Church, Custom House
St Matthew's Church, Custom House formerly served an Anglican congregation in Ethel Road, within West Ham’s Victoria Docks neighbourhood in London. Its dedication reflected the surrounding Custom House district. Worship ceased there in 1960, and the structure was removed during local redevelopment no later than 1966.
The building opened in 1860 as an outreach chapel associated with St Mark’s in Silvertown. Charles Morrison, then chairman of the company responsible for the docks, financed its construction. Responsibility subsequently passed to St Luke’s, under which it continued its mission role. An independent parish was established for St Matthew’s in 1920. From the end of the Second World War, ministers based at the Church of the Ascension cared for its congregation. In 1961, one year after closure, the former parish became part of Ascension’s.
