About St Mary's Church, Greenwich
St Mary’s Church, Greenwich was formerly an Anglican place of worship beside Greenwich Park, on King William Walk in the centre of this London district. It stood from the 1820s until its demolition in 1935. The location now forms part of an access route to the National Maritime Museum, while a monument to William IV, transferred from the City of London, occupies the former church site.
The church was created in response to local population growth early in the nineteenth century, supplementing the established parish church of St Alfege. George Basevi, who had trained under John Soane, produced a neoclassical design that showed some of his teacher’s influence. Construction began in 1823 and concluded two years later. Princess Sophia laid the foundation stone.
