About St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church stands in Notting Hill, with its address on Pottery Lane, south-west of Avondale Park. It serves a Roman Catholic parish within Kensington and Chelsea and is protected at Grade II* level. Sunday worship takes place at 10.00 am.

The Gothic Revival church was erected during 1859 and 1860, opening on 2 February 1860. Henry Clutton prepared the original design, while his assistant, John Francis Bentley, created the interior fittings under Clutton’s direction. The priest Henry Rawes financed the entire project. As attendance quickly outgrew the new building, Bentley oversaw an enlargement beginning in 1861, adding the priest’s house, baptismal area and entrance porch. Further features included several altars, the sanctuary screen, devotional containers and a confessional, together with Nathaniel Westlake’s Stations of the Cross. More recent additions and conservation included Benjamin Finn’s stained glass of 2008 and repairs to the sanctuary’s masonry, flooring and artworks in 2010.
