About St Barnabas' Church, West Silvertown
St Barnabas' Church, West Silvertown was an Anglican place of worship in east London. Its separate parish no longer exists, having been combined in 1974 with St John’s in North Woolwich and St Mark’s in Silvertown to establish the united parish of North Woolwich with Silvertown.
Founded in 1882, the church began on Eastwood Road as an outreach congregation linked to St Mark’s. The Silvertown blast of 1917 demolished its sanctuary and metal hall, forcing worshippers to meet in provisional accommodation. A replacement building was completed in 1926, the same year that the congregation received its own parish. Its boundaries were formed largely from land previously served by St Mark’s, together with a smaller section transferred from St Luke’s in Canning Town. Administration passed to the priest at St John’s, North Woolwich, following 1945.
