About Saint Dominics Priory
Saint Dominics Priory is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Southampton Road in London, south of Hampstead Heath and near Belsize Park. Dominican friars serve the active parish from their neighbouring priory. In 2016 it became a diocesan shrine with a particular focus on the Rosary. It is protected at Grade II*.
The Dominican community settled in the district in 1861, followed by the opening of the priory in 1867 and the church in 1883. Countess Tasker provided significant financial support, while the design is attributed to Gilbert R. Blount. Fourteen chapels arranged along the nave illustrate the Rosary’s mysteries with separate altars and sculpted stone screens; a further mystery appears in the sanctuary surrounding the principal altar. A medieval Blackfriars chapter-house column was placed at the eastern end in 1900. Conservation work in 2021 renewed the sanctuary and apse, restored Philip Westlake’s Stations of the Cross, and improved illumination within the chapels.
