About Roman Catholic Church of St Peter
The Roman Catholic Church of St Peter stands in Woolwich, south-east London, with its principal doorway facing Woolwich New Road. It remains an active parish church for Catholics in central Woolwich and neighbouring districts, within the Archdiocese of Southwark. The Grade II listed building is one of three churches in London for which Augustus Pugin provided the design.
Pugin drew up the Gothic Revival scheme during 1841 and 1842, with construction completed in 1843 under Woolwich builder George Myers. Its fabric combines local yellow brick, stone from Bath and a slate-covered roof. Limited funds meant that work proceeded in stages, and the proposed corner tower and spire were omitted. Pugin subsequently planned the priest’s house and vestry, completed in the mid-1840s, while the Lady Chapel was added in 1850. Between 1887 and 1889, Frederick Walters extended the east end with a new chancel and southern chapel, following Pugin’s architectural approach.
