About Roman Catholic Church of St Edward the Confessor
The Roman Catholic Church of St Edward the Confessor serves its parish in Temple Fortune, Golders Green, in the London Borough of Barnet. Situated where Finchley Road meets Hoop Lane, it neighbours Golders Green Jewish Cemetery. The building has held Grade II designation since 2016.
Catholic pastoral work in Golders Green commenced in 1908, with services first held at the local Carmelite convent. Land for a permanent home was secured in 1909, while a hall completed two years afterwards provided interim worship space. Arthur Young planned the present building in a Gothic Revival idiom. Cardinal Francis Bourne conducted the foundation ceremony on 25 March 1914, and work concluded the next year. The intended opening in September was cancelled following a Zeppelin assault on the capital, and the church instead welcomed worshippers on 13 October 1915. Sculptures by Philip Lindsey Clark depicting English holy figures were placed within the reredos in 1940. A dedicated shrine honouring St Edward followed in 1997.
