About Our Lady of Hal
Our Lady of Hal is a Roman Catholic parish church serving Camden Town in London. Situated at 165 Arlington Road, it has belonged to the Diocese of Westminster since 1982. It also houses England’s shrine connected with the medieval image of the Virgin Mary at Halle in Belgium, preserving the parish’s longstanding Belgian associations.
Catholic worship began at this site in 1922 in a modest chapel across the road. The present church, designed by Wilfred Clarence Mangan, opened in 1933 after construction began the previous year. Its Byzantine-influenced design features a multicoloured brick façade, a gabled central section, slender lancet windows and a triple-arched porch decorated with mosaics. Inside, the broad aisleless nave has exposed roof timbers and pointed concrete arches. A chapel on the north-east side contains a dark fruitwood copy of the Halle statue. The adjoining presbytery was later enlarged and refurbished around 2005.
