About New Wine Church

New Wine Church is an evangelical congregation at 2 John Wilson Street in south-east London. Housed in Gateway House, it is an active place of worship within a Grade II listed former cinema complex close to the Woolwich Ferry. The premises can also accommodate weddings, concerts, conferences, fitness classes and business gatherings.

George Coles designed the building for the Odeon chain, and it began showing films in October 1937. Its Art Deco design featured sleek lines, hidden auditorium lighting and floral plaster ornament illuminated from behind. The original seating capacity was 1,828, divided between the ground floor and an upper balcony. Refurbishment took place in 1964, and films continued there under the Odeon name until 1981. The venue later became the Coronet, reopening in 1983 and gaining two screens in 1990. Cinema use ended in 1999, before the church acquired and adapted the property in 2001.
