About New Gallery

New Gallery stands at 121 Regent Street in London and is owned by the Crown Estate. Now protected at Grade II, it was used by Seventh-day Adventists for worship between 1953 and 1992. The premises later stood unoccupied for over a decade, before accommodating a Habitat shop from 2006 to 2011. Burberry has occupied the site since September 2012.

Edward Robert Robson designed the building, which opened as an exhibition space in 1888 after construction lasting slightly more than three months. It replaced a fruit market, retaining iron columns that were faced with marble and crowned by gilded capitals in a Greek style. Platinum leaf adorned the mouldings overhead. After periods as a gallery and restaurant, the interior became a cinema in 1913. Alterations in 1925 enlarged the auditorium and added a Wurlitzer organ, which survived subsequent changes of use and was eventually returned to its original condition.
