About Metropolitan Tabernacle
Metropolitan Tabernacle is a Baptist church on Newington Butts, in the Elephant and Castle area of London. This Grade II listed place of worship remains active, with regular services supported by overflow rooms and online broadcasts. The congregation is Independent Reformed Baptist and has been led by Peter Masters since 1970.
Founded in 1650 amid restrictions on Puritan Nonconformists, the church first met under William Rider and later became Particular Baptist. Its best-known minister, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, arrived in 1854, and rapid growth prompted construction of a 6,000-seat tabernacle designed by William Willmer Pocock. It opened in 1861. Fire destroyed most of the building in 1898, while wartime bombing caused further destruction in 1941. In both disasters, the entrance portico and basement remained. A smaller church was completed in 1957, incorporating these surviving elements.
