About Lambeth Palace
Lambeth Palace is the Archbishop of Canterbury’s official residence in London. Standing beside the Thames in north Lambeth, it faces Westminster from the southern bank and remains closely associated with the leadership of the Anglican Communion. The architectural complex has Grade I listed status, while its garden is also protected.
The archbishopric obtained the estate around 1200, and the earliest surviving element is an Early English Gothic chapel dating from about 1230. A ragstone tower with dressed-stone corners was built in 1434–35 and later enlarged. Parliamentarian forces damaged and partly destroyed the palace during the Civil War, prompting substantial rebuilding between 1660 and 1663. Edward Blore added extensive neo-Gothic accommodation from 1829 to 1834 and replaced the timber cloister. After wartime bombing left only the chapel walls intact, it was restored in 1954–55 and again during 1986–88. Notable survivals include the vaulted undercroft, the restored 14th-century Guard Chamber and its original ornate roof.
