About Keith's Chapel
Keith's Chapel was a privately run place of worship on Curzon Street in Mayfair, within Westminster, London. Sometimes called the May Fair Chapel, it was associated with Anglican clergyman Alexander Keith and became known chiefly for weddings. Its marriage operations ceased in 1754 after legislation passed the previous year came into force.
Keith opened the chapel near Curzon Chapel, where he had served from 1730 before being expelled from the Church by a religious court in 1742 and imprisoned. He and his assistants arranged marriages without licences or the public announcement of banns. These unions were legally recognised under the rules then applying in England, which required an Anglican minister. Around 6,000 couples were married there each year during its busiest period. Advertisements placed the chapel in a corner property near Hyde Park Corner and noted a church-like entrance porch.
