About Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel
Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel is a Presbyterian Church of Wales congregation in the City of London, within Greater London. It continues the religious traditions of London’s Welsh community. Following a steep decline in attendance, broadcaster Huw Edwards led a preservation campaign in 2013 and sometimes served as a substitute organist. Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones supported the effort through his contribution to BBC Wales Today’s Children in Need coverage that year.
The congregation first worshipped in Cock Lane, Smithfield, around 1774. It later relocated to Wilderness Row in Clerkenwell, then opened a chapel at Jewin Crescent in 1822. A further move followed in 1879, but the resulting Victorian chapel was lost during air raids in September 1940. Its replacement opened in 1960 beside the Golden Lane Estate. Caroe & Partners designed the present church in a modern, Swedish-influenced style associated with New Humanism.
