About Hyde Park Chapel
Hyde Park Chapel is a Latter-day Saint meeting place in South Kensington, London. The church continues to serve seven wards within the London England Hyde Park stake. It also accommodates facilities for visitors and family-history research, together with teaching rooms, a children’s worship space and areas for meetings and recreation.
Thomas Bennett designed the church, which was completed and dedicated in 1961 on a Princes Gate plot left vacant after wartime bombing. Constructed with a reinforced concrete frame, it has Portland stone cladding, four principal floors and a tower extending across six levels. A gilded spire crowns the tower, with dalle de verre glasswork by Pierre Fourmaintraux below it. The interior includes a notable concert organ, while a replica of Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Christus sculpture stands near the doorway. Refurbishment followed in 1995, and another renovation took place ahead of London’s 2012 Olympic Games.
