About Holy Trinity Gough Square

Holy Trinity Gough Square was a short-lived Victorian place of worship in the City of London. Created to serve part of St Bride’s parish, it provided space for local residents whom the existing parish church could not accommodate. It later closed, and the parish was reunited with St Bride’s.

Thomas Dale, the vicar, promoted the scheme, which developed from an initial plan for a combined school and chapel. John Shaw Junior designed the church, consecrated in 1838, on a confined three-cornered plot supplied by the Goldsmiths Company. The yellow-brick building had a six-sided main space, an eastern chancel with eight sides, arched windows and a Romanesque-style tower with pinnacles. Two internal gallery levels were carried by narrow iron supports, with the organ positioned above the entrance at the west. There was room for 1,100 people, half without pew rents. Funds raised through its sale contributed to St Mellitus Church in Hanwell.
