About Holy Trinity Church, Canning Town
Holy Trinity Church, Canning Town was an Anglican place of worship in Canning Town, east London. It is no longer standing: after closing in 1948, the property was purchased by the local council and cleared for housing. The ecclesiastical district remained in existence until 1961, when most joined St Matthias’ and the remainder became part of St Cedd’s.
Its beginnings lay in missionary work among Hallsville’s increasing population, led by Antonio Brady and the incumbent of St Mary’s in Plaistow. The congregation first met in a school beside Barking Road before its purpose-built home opened in 1867. A distinct parish followed one year later, assembled from territory previously belonging to St Mary’s and All Saints. Air raids severely harmed the building during 1941, though worship resumed there in 1942. Money awarded for the wartime destruction was subsequently used towards building St Erkenwald’s in Barking, which opened in 1954.
