About Hinde Street Methodist Church
Hinde Street Methodist Church is an active place of worship in Marylebone, central London. The Grade II listed church serves a congregation that includes many young adults and supports the social work of the West London Mission. Sunday worship is held regularly, and the mission’s headquarters adjoin the chapel in Thayer Street.
A chapel seating about 900 people opened on the site in 1810, replacing earlier Methodist premises nearby. It was designed by the Methodist preacher and architect William Jenkins. The current building, created by Wesleyan architect James Weir, replaced that chapel and opened in 1887. Its principal features include a classically designed façade, tall spire, curved gallery and elevated pulpit. Much of the interior survives, although the ground-floor pews have been removed. The east window dates from 1929 and was designed by Francis Spear. An organ made by Bishop and Sons in 1864 was reconstructed in 1910 and again in 1983. Glass entrance doors were added in 2014.
