About Granada Cinema
Granada Cinema in Woolwich, south-east London, is a former picture house now used as a church hall by Christ Faith Tabernacle Churches. Also called the Ebenezer Building and the Cathedral, it is protected at Grade II* for its architectural and historic importance.
Completed in 1937, the cinema was designed by Cecil Masey and Reginald Uren, with interiors by Theodore Komisarjevsky. Its restrained modernist exterior combines a brown-brick auditorium with a curved, asymmetrical entrance facing Powis Street. Inside, elaborate Gothic-influenced decoration contrasts with the façade, including galleries, ornate lighting and a coffered foyer ceiling. The original auditorium accommodated 2,434 people. After cinema use declined, the building became a bingo hall in 1966 and was acquired by the church in 2011. Restoration has included replacement doors, lighting based on historic fittings, carpets following the 1930s pattern, and renewed stalls and balcony seating.
