About French Protestant Church of London
The French Protestant Church of London is a Reformed and Presbyterian congregation in Soho Square, serving London’s French-speaking community. Founded in the sixteenth century, it is the city’s sole surviving Huguenot church and remains in use today. Its Aston Webb building is Grade II listed, and the congregation is organised as a registered charity with a Consistory as its governing body.
The church was established under a charter granted by Edward VI in 1550. Ten years later, John Calvin sent the pastor Nicolas des Gallars from Geneva to shape its Reformed beliefs and Presbyterian structure. London had 23 Huguenot places of worship by 1700, following the arrival of French refugees after the Edict of Nantes was revoked in 1685. Soho continued as a focus for the French community during the nineteenth century. The present church was designed by Aston Webb, constructed between 1891 and 1893, and completed in 1893.
