About Fitzrovia Chapel

Fitzrovia Chapel stands in Pearson Square within Fitzroy Place, in London’s Fitzrovia district. Formerly the chapel of Middlesex Hospital, it survived the demolition of the surrounding hospital buildings and is protected at Grade II*; it is now managed by a charitable foundation. Religious services are no longer held there, although the historic building hosts secular ceremonies, exhibitions and other events.

John Loughborough Pearson designed the chapel in an Italian-influenced Gothic Revival style, and construction took place in 1891–92. His son, Frank Loughborough Pearson, later supervised the completion of the interior, finished in 1929. Its richly ornamented scheme includes polychrome marble, green onyx and mosaics, with blue stars set against gold across the rib-vaulted ceiling. Other details include carved figures of the Apostles and biblical prophets, a solid green-marble font, a west-end organ gallery and a white-marble memorial to Prince Francis of Teck. The building is unusually aligned roughly north to south.
