About Enon Chapel

Enon Chapel stood in Clement’s Lane, close to Aldwych and the Strand in London. Erected about 1823, it ceased operating as a chapel during the nineteenth century and was eventually demolished. The site was later partly occupied by the law courts.

The church’s worship room was positioned above an underground burial chamber, with timber boards dividing the two spaces. Interments began under licence in 1823 and ended after the minister died in 1842. Reports alleged that the chamber held several thousand corpses, though doctor John Snow challenged these accounts after examining the premises. George Walker, a surgeon, acquired the property in 1847 and paid for the remains to be moved and buried again at Norwood Cemetery. The controversy influenced the legislation of 1852 that restricted burials across metropolitan London. Afterwards, the former chapel served briefly as an entertainment venue and later housed dancing.
