About Church of St Joseph
The Church of St Joseph is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Highgate Hill, London, in the Westminster diocese. Established in 1858 and continuing as a parish, the church is protected with Grade II* listed status.
The Passionists founded the parish under Father Ignatius Spencer, initially using the Old Black Dog Inn as both chapel and community residence. A church designed by John Bird followed in the 1860s, but was soon insufficient for the congregation. Work on the present structure began in 1888, with its opening held in 1889 and consecration taking place after the remaining costs were paid in 1932. Albert Vicars drew on Romanesque and Byzantine architecture, creating a building crowned by a large green copper dome. Notable interior details include Nathaniel Westlake’s decorated ceiling of 250 angel panels, marble sanctuary fittings, painted relief Stations of the Cross and several chapels. A William Hill & Sons organ dating from 1898 later became a memorial to local wartime dead.
