About Christ the King
Christ the King is a Roman Catholic church in Wimbledon Park, within the London Borough of Merton. It is an active parish church, with Mass celebrated throughout the week, including a Polish-language service on Sundays. The parish has been served by the Diocese of Southwark since 1959.
Catholic ministry in Wimbledon Park began in 1913, when Jesuit priest Ignatius O’Gorman started visiting local residents from Sacred Heart, Wimbledon. Permission for a new church was granted in 1926 by the rector of Sacred Heart and Peter Amigo, Bishop of Southwark. Designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott, the building was finished in 1928. It had initially been intended for dedication to Saint Austin, but received its present name following Pope Pius XI’s establishment of the feast of Christ the King in 1925. Formerly dependent on Sacred Heart, the church gained parish status in 1955.
