About Christ Church and Upton Chapel
Christ Church and Upton Chapel stands at 77 Westminster Bridge Road in London. Formerly a combined United Reformed place of worship, it was later associated with the Oasis Trust and known as Church.co.uk, Waterloo. The wider site became Oasis Academy South Bank in 2013–14, when the chapel space was adapted as a sports hall.
The original Congregational church was established in 1876 by the Revd Dr Christopher Newman Hall, with many worshippers coming from Surrey Chapel. After wartime bombing destroyed both this building and the Baptist Upton Chapel, they were united in a smaller structure rebuilt from the late 1950s into the early 1960s. The modernist chapel was incorporated discreetly within an office block. The neighbouring Lincoln Memorial Tower survived the bombing, while salvaged foundation stones and an 1894 plaque preserved links with the Victorian building. An eastern stained-glass window was later covered because of its dated portrayals of slavery and Black people.
