About Chapel of St Thomas on the Bridge
The Chapel of St Thomas on the Bridge stood close to the middle of Old London Bridge, linking the City of London and Southwark. It ceased to function as a place of worship in 1548 and was adapted for secular purposes. The surviving lower level remained a storeroom until the bridge was demolished in 1832, so the chapel no longer stands today.
Founded before 1205 and completed by 1209, the church occupied an enlarged bridge pier and had upper and lower chapels. The street-level chapel featured clustered columns and tall arched windows, while the vaulted undercroft formed part of the pier and had black-and-white marble paving. Both levels ended in a three-sided eastern apse. After fire damaged it in 1212, it was soon reconstructed, with further rebuilding and enlargement undertaken between 1384 and 1397. The upper floor later served as a home and warehouse before its removal in 1747.
