About Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Kilburn
The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Kilburn is a functioning Roman Catholic parish in north-west London. Occupying the meeting point of Quex Road with Mazenod Road, it adjoins St Eugene de Mazenod Primary School. The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate established the parish and still provide its clergy.
The Oblates arrived in Kilburn during 1865 and initially erected a temporary place for services. They purchased land for the present church in 1866. E. W. Pugin drew up its plans, and following his death in 1875, his brothers Cuthbert and Peter continued the project alongside George Ashlin. The nave opened in 1879; further work during 1898 and 1899 provided an extended eastern end, chapels and a sanctuary. A porch dates from 1959. Alterations five years later broadened the southern aisle and introduced transepts, a relocated sanctuary and a high altar dedicated to the memory of John F. Kennedy. Arthur Fleischmann later created a panel showing the Last Supper.
