About Brook Street Chapel

Brook Street Chapel is a Christian place of worship in Tottenham, London, established for a congregation associated with the Plymouth Brethren. Its frontage is now partly screened from the A10 by later development, leading to its local nickname, the hidden church. Inside, the Tottenham Memorandum records the congregation’s decision to follow the open Brethren tradition and welcome professing Christian believers.

The congregation began in 1838, when about eight former Quakers gathered at Mrs Sands’s home in what is now Stoneleigh Road. The meeting house opened the following year, with John Eliot Howard, Robert Howard and their father Luke closely involved. Numbers rose to about 140 by 1851, while the Sunday school later served an estimated 600 children. Extensions added a schoolroom in 1939 and a hall for young people in 1955. Wartime bombing removed houses along the remainder of Brook Street, leaving the expanded chapel to occupy the street. Its former burial ground is now a public playground and paved space.
