About American International Church
The American International Church is a Christian congregation meeting in Whitefield Memorial Church, on London’s Tottenham Court Road. Initially formed for expatriates from the United States, it now serves a community representing roughly 30 nationalities. The broader identity prompted the congregation to adopt its present name in 2013. It also runs a soup kitchen that provides food for about 70 people daily.
George Whitefield founded the earliest chapel here in 1756, with an extension following in 1759. The structure was dismantled and rebuilt in 1890 for use as Whitefield’s Central Mission. A V-2 missile demolished it on Palm Sunday 1945, during the closing weeks of the Second World War. Its successor opened in 1957. The American congregation became independent in 1969, following earlier pastoral support from United States military chaplains, and relocated to this chapel three years later. The premises are also used by the London Chinese Lutheran Church.
