About All Saints Church
All Saints Church is the historic Church of England parish church for Kingston upon Thames, Greater London. Standing on Market Place near the town’s principal shopping area, it remains an active place of worship within the Diocese of Southwark. It belongs to an Anglican team serving Kingston’s residents, schools, businesses and university. The church is Grade I listed and is Kingston’s only building with that designation.
A Saxon place of worship previously occupied the site, where several English kings were crowned during the tenth century. Construction of the present church started in 1120 at Henry I’s command, followed by centuries of alteration. Its cross-shaped plan includes a central tower, nave, choir, aisles, transepts and chapels. Flint walls are finished with stone detailing and a battlemented parapet. The nave was enlarged in the fourteenth century, while the chancel and chapels date from the fifteenth. Later work included rebuilding the tower in brick in 1708 and substantial Victorian restoration. Interior features include twelve bells, an eighteenth-century carillon, a medieval image of St Blaise, a large west window and a Frobenius organ fitted in 1988.
