Before the present building was completed, local Catholics worshipped in Grove Road at a chapel originally used by a Congregational community. The current church dates from 1940 and was constructed by builders based in the area. Its artistic details include Frank Brangwyn’s depictions of Christ’s journey to the Crucifixion. A sculpture of the church’s patron saint is positioned over the doorway; it was made by Joseph Cribb, who trained with Eric Gill.
