About Saint Mary's Parish Church
Saint Mary's Parish Church is a Church of England parish church on Thames Street in Hampton, Greater London. Set on Bell Hill near the meeting of the A308 and A311, it occupies a prominent place in Hampton’s historic centre. The church remains an active place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Christian worship on the site is documented from 1342, although an earlier chapel may have existed there. The previous flint, stone and brick church was demolished after closing in 1829, with services temporarily held at Hampton Court Palace. Prince William, Duke of Clarence, placed the foundation stone in April 1830, and Edward Lapidge’s new church was consecrated in September 1831. Later changes included a chancel and an east window by Heaton, Butler and Bayne in 1887. The church also retains memorials transferred from its predecessor, while its organ was repositioned in 1879 and rebuilt in 1901.
