About St Mark's Church
St Mark’s Church serves an Anglican parish in Bromley, Greater London, within Rochester Diocese. The church stands in Westmoreland Road, below the centre of Bromley, and remains a place of parish worship.
The congregation began meeting during the 1880s, first in a prefabricated iron structure moved from Bromley Common. A permanent building by Evelyn Hellicar was consecrated in 1898. Its entrance tower was initially incomplete, reaching its intended height five years later. The structure used brickwork with a red outer facing from Dunton Green and stone ornament brought from Somerset. Bombing in 1941 left the tower intact but badly damaged the remainder, including the roof, windows, gallery and organ. Reconstruction by T. W. G. Grant retained the existing footprint and incorporated surviving fabric; the restored church was dedicated again in 1953. Earlier features still present include carved capitals, choir seating, the reredos and parts of the nave arches, while the font, lectern and Rushworth and Dreaper organ came from the post-war work.
