About St Philip and St James Church, Leckhampton
St Philip and St James Church, Leckhampton is an active Anglican parish church in southern Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Gloucester and the South Cheltenham group of parishes. This Grade II* listed place of worship has a congregation numbering more than 200. Services range from traditional to more relaxed forms, supported by an organ, an adult choir in robes and, on occasion, musicians playing mainly acoustic instruments.
The original chapel, then known as St Philip’s, was consecrated in 1840 and gained its own parish in 1869. As local numbers increased, it was enlarged and substantially reconstructed over three years. The resulting Victorian Gothic building opened for worship in 1882. Its foundations could not support the intended spire, and a saddleback tower was added instead in 1903. Notable details include a carved reredos of stone in the chancel and an Emmaus supper painting in a side chapel. In 1963, a crypt columbarium was provided for cremated remains. Interior alterations started in 2020, creating a flexible nave while retaining the chancel and principal altar.
