About Kelvinside Free Church, 731 Great Western Road, Glasgow
Kelvinside Free Church is a former church at 731 Great Western Road in Glasgow. Now known as Òran Mór, the Category B listed building operates as a venue for theatre, music, dining and other entertainment. It ceased to be used for worship after its congregation united with Hillhead Parish Church in 1978.
Founded for a Free Church of Scotland parish, the foundation stone was placed in September 1862. J. J. Stevenson designed the building in a Neo-Gothic style, with a distinctive spire shaped in the manner of an Italian Gothic pyramid. It became Kelvinside United Free Church following the denominational union of 1900, then Kelvinside Parish Church when it joined the Church of Scotland in 1929. After standing redundant and derelict, the former church was refurbished from 2002 and reopened under its present name in June 2004.
