About Caledonia Road United Presbyterian Church, 1 Caledonia Road, Glasgow
Caledonia Road United Presbyterian Church stands at 1 Caledonia Road in Glasgow’s Gorbals district, where two major roads meet around its narrow site. It is now a ruin rather than an active place of worship and has Category A listed status. The surviving structure remains at high risk.
John Baird designed the Greek Revival church while working in partnership with Alexander Thomson. Building began in 1855, and Thomson oversaw its completion after the partnership ended the following year. It opened on 22 March 1857 and cost approximately £8,000. Worship ceased in 1963, after which Glasgow Corporation acquired the property. An arson attack caused a fire in October 1965, followed by partial demolition. Later proposals for restoration and reuse were not realised, although stabilisation work was undertaken. Notable surviving elements include a six-column Ionic portico, ornamented entrances, and a square western tower with narrow groups of three openings, a lantern and a cross.
