About St Cyngar's Church, Hope
St Cyngar’s Church stands within an elevated, rounded churchyard in Hope, Flintshire. This active Church of England parish church is associated with the Celtic saints Cynfarch and Cyngar and has historically occupied an important place in village life. Regarded as Flintshire’s earliest surviving church, the building has Grade I listed protection.
The fabric evolved from a modest stone building erected towards the end of the twelfth century, while evidence of a Celtic cross points to worship on the site in the ninth or tenth century. Enlargement followed across the next two centuries, with a northern addition made in about 1490 to 1500. Built from local freestone and sandstone, beneath slate roofs, the church has two parallel naves and a crenellated west tower finished in 1568. Six bells added in 1921 commemorate the First World War. Earlier stained-glass fragments were assembled in the east window in 1730, and the chapel underwent reconstruction in 2000 because of structural danger from dry rot.
