About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church stands on Church Bank in Welshpool, Powys. It is the town’s active Church of England parish church, within the Diocese of St Asaph, and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Tradition attributes its foundation to St Cynfelin, or St Matu, during the Welsh Age of Saints in the fifth or sixth century. The present church originated around 1250, although only the tower’s lowest masonry survives from that period. Its nave was reconstructed in the sixteenth century, while George Edmund Street oversaw extensive restoration and rebuilding in 1871. The fifteenth-century chancel roof may have been brought from nearby Strata Marcella Abbey, and a churchyard stone is traditionally linked with the abbot’s seat. A memorial recalls William Morgan, who served as vicar between 1575 and 1579 and translated the Bible into Welsh.
