About Holywell Workhouse Chapel
Holywell Workhouse Chapel stands on Old Chester Road in Holywell, Flintshire. Originally associated with the town’s workhouse, it is now recognised by Cadw as a Grade II listed building. The workhouse was later converted into Lluesty Hospital, giving the chapel a subsequent connection with the hospital site.
The church dates from 1883–84, when it was constructed alongside wards for itinerant residents of the workhouse. Its plans were prepared by John Douglas, an architect based in Chester. Stone was used for the walls and slate for the roof. A slender flèche, clad in wooden shingles, rises above the building and forms its principal external feature. The chapel and the accompanying wards belonged to the same phase of development at the workhouse.
