About Church of St. Mary the Virgin
The Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Holywell, Flintshire, continues to serve an Anglican parish in the Diocese of St Asaph. Cadw has granted the church Grade I status in recognition of its architectural importance.
The current building opened in 1878 after its predecessor was removed, with the replacement erected elsewhere. Chester architect John Douglas prepared the design, financed by the 1st Duke of Westminster. Early English and Decorated influences are brought together in its Gothic Revival architecture, executed in finely cut stone throughout. The layout incorporates a chancel, nave of four bays, northern aisle, southern porch and a tower positioned at the north-east. Douglas was also responsible for the carefully crafted timber fittings. Heaton, Butler and Bayne supplied stained glass for every window. A medieval carving showing the Crucifixion, once belonging to a churchyard cross from the 1300s, is set into one of the buttresses on the southern side.
