About St Deiniol's Church
St Deiniol’s Church stands in Hawarden, in the Deeside area of Flintshire, and serves as an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of St Asaph. It has longstanding connections with W. E. Gladstone’s family and is protected with Grade II* status.
Christian worship on the site has a history of at least ten centuries, while recorded clergy can be traced to 1180. James Harrison oversaw restoration during 1855 and 1856, before an intentionally started blaze caused extensive damage in October 1857. Sir George Gilbert Scott directed the subsequent repairs, completed in 1859. Further work brought a new porch in 1896, a chapel commemorating Gladstone between 1901 and 1903, and vestries in 1908–09. The church includes a chancel, two aisles and a centrally placed Perpendicular tower with a low, lead-clad spire. Highlights include stained glass connected with Edward Burne-Jones, family memorials, and the marble monument depicting W. E. and Catherine Gladstone.
