About Hope Park and Martyrs Church

Hope Park and Martyrs Church is situated in St Marys Place, St Andrews, Fife. It serves a Church of Scotland congregation and is now within St Mark’s parish. The present place of worship has Category B listed status.

Its origins lie in the 1730s, following the secession associated with Ebenezer Erskine. A locally formed Kirk Session gained formal acceptance in 1738, after worshippers had first assembled in the open air. The congregation later met in a barn at Imrie’s Close, premises at Burghers’ Close and a chapel erected on North Street in 1827. Peddie & Kinnear designed the current building, which opened in 1865 and took the name Hope Park at the suggestion of the minister, James Black. Among its distinctive details are decorative glass windows and an uncommon covering over the pulpit. After belonging to several Presbyterian denominations, the congregation entered the Church of Scotland in 1929.
