About Holy Trinity
Holy Trinity is a parish church belonging to the Church of Scotland in St Andrews, Fife. Known locally as the town kirk, it remains a place of parish worship and has statutory protection at Category A.
Its origins date to about 1144, when Bishop Robert Kennedy established it near the cathedral. Bishop David de Bernham conducted its dedication in 1234, and Bishop Wardlaw transferred it to South Street during 1410–12. John Knox gave his earliest public sermon there in 1547, returning in 1559 for preaching associated with the removal of church furnishings. Robert Balfour substantially reconstructed the building during 1798–1800, when many historic architectural details disappeared. From 1907 to 1909, MacGregor Chalmers reshaped it with a more decorative interpretation of medieval design. Earlier elements still present include its tower and spire at the north-west, along with portions of the internal arcade.
